Argus Interview - Lynda Paine

Interview with Lynda Paine from the The Argus, first published Monday 16th Jun 2008.

What is it you do? We are letting agents with a green conscience.

Why did you pick that? I guess I have an interest in property but what I most enjoy about the job is matching people to the right properties and ensuring the tenancy runs smoothly while they are living there. I deal with a lot of maintenance issues and can arrange anything from fixing a dripping tap to full redecoration and building repairs.

What makes you greener than other organisations? All of us at Lynda Paine Lettings are extremely conscientious when it comes to the environment. We have changed most of our office supplies to recycled products and we recycle all our office waste.

What is your latest green obsession/campaign? Our latest green obsession has got to be our viewing cars. We recognise the need to have a vehicle in business but we wanted to ensure we kept our carbon footprint to a minimum, so firstly we purchased a Smart car, then more recently we bought the Toyota Prius, a hybrid car. It's fantastic - lots of gadgets but one of the greenest cars on the road.

How hard is it to be truly green in Sussex? I live in Worthing and I only received my first wheelie bin about nine months ago so it was a bit difficult to recycle before. We did do weekly trips to the tip for recycling but, to be honest, now we have the bins we recycle loads more.

What's your guiltiest green secret? I'm afraid my husband has a four-wheel- drive, but it's certainly not for the school run! As a family we really enjoy camping so we need a larger vehicle to carry all the equipment needed to make it comfortable.

What is the biggest thing you have sacrificed to be green? We have replaced at least two flights a year by going camping for our holidays instead.

Are you a climate worrier or are you more optimistic? I am optimistic about the planet but I do worry at the same time. I have two lovely daughters and it worries me at times what their lives will become like if we don't all do as much as we can right now.

In a nutshell, what's your philosophy on living a greener life? I love being green, I get great satisfaction from doing my bit for the environment. I am going to continue to work hard to be as green as I possibly can. That way, whatever happens, I will be able to say I tried - along with millions of others, of course!
